Compassionate Care is a Lifeline for the Living

San Luis Obispo County is fortunate to be home to one of the country's 17 remaining non-medical volunteer hospices. With its unique range of services, Hospice SLO County is a beacon of support for members of our community.

Many people mistakenly believe that hospice services are only available at the very end of life. However, our team at Hospice SLO County provides comprehensive care and support to individuals and their families throughout the entire journey.

Take the story of Sharon* and her husband, Greg*. In 2016, Sharon had to stop working at her successful business because Greg's serious heart condition and other chronic diseases had left him homebound. Seeking help, Sharon reached out to Hospice SLO County.

Sharon first contacted Hospice SLO in 2016, and she and Greg were matched with a volunteer to provide socialization for Greg and respite for Sharon. Greg and Sharon still have a weekly volunteer visit that allows Sharon some time to rest and relax and gives Greg much-needed social support.

But Hospice SLO County's support didn't stop there. Sharon has also utilized the organization's care management services since 2018, receiving monthly check-ins, helping with care planning, and accessing valuable resources. Sharon has also participated in the organization's online caregiver support group, fostering a sense of community and connection with others in similar situations without leaving Greg's side.

Sharon told us recently that she is so grateful for the kind and consistent help that is free of charge and helps her keep Greg at home.
