ABOUT HOSPICE SLO COUNTY

ABOUT HOSPICE SLO COUNTY

Hospice SLO County is a non-medical volunteer service organization and community grief center.

Hospice SLO County is a non-medical volunteer service organization and community grief center. We believe that the end of life deserves as much respect as the beginning. We support San Luis Obispo County residents who are grieving a death or coping with a life-limiting illness or facing end of life.

All Hospice SLO County Services are provided at no charge, and we do not bill insurance. We depend 100% on community donations, fundraising events, grants, bequests, planned gifts, and the time and talent of over 120 volunteers to serve our clients annually.

Hospice SLO County is one of four hospices in SLO County, but the only non-medical volunteer hospice. We are one of 17 non-medical hospices left in the country.

OUR SERVICES

Since 1977, Hospice SLO County has provided countywide non-medical in-home respite care, emotional support, practical assistance and comfort to individuals, their families and caregivers who are coping with a life limiting illness. We train and supervise volunteers to go into homes to provide in-home support and caregiver respite as soon as someone is diagnosed with a life limiting illness. Additionally, our volunteer end-of-life companions provide non-medical, holistic support and comfort to the dying person and their family, which may include education, emotional support, and practical care.

As a community grief center, our grief counseling services are available to anyone in SLO County coping with a death (including animals) regardless of when, where, or how the death occurred. We offer individual and family counseling and various support groups as well as a Community Grief Response Team to help businesses and organizations process the death of a co-worker or member. Anticipatory grief counseling is also available. Grief counseling offers invaluable support to help people get through the process of loss and relieves the loneliness and isolation that often follows the loss of someone close.

OUR MISSION

We recognize death as a natural and personal event. In this spirit, we support the community in working with those near the end of life and the people who love them by providing in-home support, caregiver respite, grief counseling, support groups, community response and education.

OUR VISION

We envision a community that recognizes death as a part of life; where dying and grieving are embraced as natural; where all have access to support services without charge; where no one dies or is left to grieve without comfort.
